Settlers storm Bab al-Rahma cemetery and perform Talmudic rituals near Al-Aqsa Mosque

On Friday, settlers stormed the Bab al-Rahma cemetery, which is adjacent to the eastern wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Jerusalem Governorate reported that settlers performed Talmudic rituals this morning to mark what is called the seventh and final day of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, carrying with them what they call the “four types” of plants. This took place opposite the Gate of Mercy on the outer side of the eastern wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, adjacent to Muslim graves, according to the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA). The Governorate added that these rituals come within the context of a recurring pattern witnessed in the area recently, as part of a strategy by Jewish groups to establish the area adjacent to the Gate of Mercy as a point for Jewish prayer and religious rituals. This is done through organizing frequent gatherings and prayers at the site, and promoting religious and historical narratives that claim the importance and significance of the place to Jews. Some of these narratives even present the site as having greater importance than the Western Wall, according to what these groups promote.

The Jerusalem Governorate warned that the repetition and escalating organization of these rituals is not separate from attempts to impose a new reality in the vicinity of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and to transform the area adjacent to the Gate of Mercy into a permanent site for Jewish rituals, which constitutes an infringement on the Islamic identity of the place and a targeting of the historical and legal status quo in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its surroundings.

It should be noted that in recent weeks there has been intensive desecration of the Bab al-Rahma cemetery by settlers in an attempt to take control of it and expand the space for performing their Talmudic rituals in Islamic holy places.
