The head of the taxi and public vehicle office owners’ syndicate, Muhammad Shahada Al-Hadid, said on Wednesday that the taxi meter fare will be adjusted next Monday, as it will increase by one or two piasters.
Al-Hadid explained that the opening of the daytime meter will become 39 piasters instead of 37 piasters, while the opening of the nighttime meter will become 40 piasters instead of 38 piasters.
He added that the daytime fare per kilometer will increase from 26 piasters to 28 piasters, while the nighttime fare will increase from 32 piasters to 33 piasters per kilometer.
He pointed out that taxi drivers bore part of the increase in gasoline prices, as the new fare did not reflect the full cost.
For her part, Abla Al-Washah, spokesperson for the Land Transport Regulatory Authority, said that the cost of transportation via applications will increase by 20%.
The authority linked the adjustment of public transport fares, so that the increase includes about 75% of the routes by about 5 piasters, while an increase of about 10 piasters is applied to about 25% of the longer routes, as part of a step aimed at restoring balance between the cost of operation and the continuity of service, taking into account the direct impact on users.
In this context, taxi fares will be adjusted in coordination with the relevant authorities, taking into account the specificities of each governorate, while the land freight sector continues to operate according to a floating mechanism linked to fuel prices, which allows flexibility in dealing with changes without the need for frequent interventions.
